Dan already accepted the task of donating blood. This is very good, because donations save lives. Not sure what the statistics are now, but it used to be that 1 donation could potentially save 3 lives, but I digress.
Blood is one thing, but bone marrow is something else altogether. There are an alarming number of people who need bone marrow transplants to survive. The problem is that each patient who needs it has very few compatable doners. Often there is only one potential doner who is a close enough match.
This may seem selfish, but the reason I say this (and the reason why I created the task suggestion) is because a very good friend of mine is currently living on borrowed time, and needs a bone marrow transplant, or he won't live to see his next birthday. The Canadian Blood Service's Bone Marrow network is called OneMatch for a reason. I believe that everybody who can donate blood should at the very least start the process.
Every volunteer helps.
