I have been following the project Dan 3.0 with great interest. I think it is a social experiment with great value that could teach us a lot about crowdsurfing, online communities, and the like.
Dan recently had a little breakdown and was attacked by roving bands of trolls about this. That was not a failure. I dare say it was a vital and intriguing result of the experiment, and while experiencing it might have been very hard but, it was in itself a thing of value. Like how a child learns about pain when it tries to pet a hedgehog.
My two cents:
I think that Dan's focusing on individual tasks may not be the ideal approach. In the long run, these tasks don't create the feel of progress. Time passes and more and more ideas flow into the decision engine. They will only increase and the moment will come where he has to turn down ideas that have been voted up by hundreds, simply because there is no time to do them. In a way this means thousands of little cuts that may give the impression of a ton of unused potential and thousands of disappointed people. This is of course understandable but false.
I think that instead of focusing on daily tasks, he should focus on larger projects and use his vlog as a way to give updates and ask people for help. That last thing is key, i think he should ask us, his viewers, to participate. A thousand people can achieve a lot by spending 10 minutes of their time being part of something huge. By focusing on a few large projects, he would also get a sense of fulfillment, he could actually achieve something awesome. I also think this might be closer to the whole idea of tribal leadership.
Now about those trolls. They too are part of this experiment and are an internet phenomenon that is not going to go away. They are the little white mice of the experiment, Dan is the experiment leader.
Regardless of what Dan does with Dan 3.0, I can tell you that it will be a very interesting thing to follow from an academic point of view and that as long as he does not give up, there is no way this can end up as a failure.
