Hi guys,
I suppose a lot of you have heard of "Earth Hour" and I hope a lot people will also participate in it! But if you don't know it yet; then please let me have a few minutes of your time
Earth Hour letter to a community:
At 8.30pm on 27 March 2010, millions of people in cities across the planet will turn off their
lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to show the world that a solution to the threat of global
warming is possible through collective action. WWF and Earth Hour supporters around the
world want your community group to be part of this historic moment.
There are many ways community groups can support Earth Hour, from turning out the lights
in their buildings/facilities on the night through to encouraging members to join the Earth
Hour initiative. Show current and future members you’re supporting Earth Hour and
contributing to a global climate resolution!
1) Turn out lights at 8:30 – 9.30pm Saturday 27 March 2010
Turn out the lights in your buildings, facilities and any signage for one hour at 8:30pm on
Saturday 27 March 2010. Join other community groups worldwide in this global action. For
larger buildings, the facilities and building managers need to manage the logistics of
switching off non-essential lighting for Earth Hour (including neon lights) in and around your
properties.
2) Communicate Earth Hour to group members
Communicate Earth Hour to your members and customers,
encourage them to take part in Earth Hour on 27 March. You can
do this by:
• Informing group members through announcements at group
meetings.
• Displaying Earth Hour posters on buildings/facilities;
• Including a link to the Earth Hour website on your homepage
or hosting an Earth Hour banner on your website;
• Including the Earth Hour logo on monthly newsletters to group members, on
letterheads and in email signatures;
• Organising special activities and events in conjunction with Earth Hour. Some
creative ideas include holding candlelight parties, or even a scavenger hunt in
the dark.
4) Make change an everyday part of your community group
Participation in Earth Hour is just the first step on an important journey for every community
organisation to become sustainable and energy efficient.
If you’ve assessed the emissions of your group’s activities you’ll be aware that the simple
changes Earth Hour encourages you to make on an ongoing basis are very achievable.
These are just some of the ways your community group can start to reduce emissions and
operating costs today:
• Turning off lights after hours in back offices or installing motion-sensor lighting.
• Installing energy saving lights and energy saving devices (e.g. timers on lighting).
• Turning off printers, computers, monitors, microwaves and coffee machines at the
power points at the end of the day when unused for long periods.
• Switching your organisation’s electricity to Gold Standard Green Power.
Furthermore, involve your staff in everyday change. Elect Earth Hour Monitors for your
university, whose job it is to ensure lights are out and appliances are off standby at the end
of each working day.
5) Show us what your community group is doing for Earth Hour
Earth Hour has many opportunities to showcase what your community group is doing to
support the initiative, from media and PR through to the Earth Hour website and email
bulletins. Please let us know so we can show the world your efforts! Contact us to discuss
the public relation opportunities for your organisation: newsdesk@earthhour.org
Thanks for your support!
So do remember to turn off the lights on Saturday 27 March 2010!!
