Ahh. Anyway, Portal IS one of the most complicated and best stories in gaming.. Along with Mass Effect, and GTA, and Metal Gear Solid, and Bioshock.. Etc.. oh boy portal, mass effect, bioshock and mgs i can see. you're new to gaming and haven't played the classic crpgs from the late 90s so naturally those are the best stories you have experienced. but god fucking damned gta? You don't think GTA 4? I have played 90s games, they just didn't come to mind..

I don't even DINGing care what the DING is bothering you outside the forum.
Frankly, you're being as ignorant as I am, if I'm being ignorant.
Old games aren't the only type of games. Just because we love them so doesn't mean they can't be improved.

You seem to have some kick with these 'casual gamers'. Like they don't deserve to play the games as much as 'hardcore gamers' do? I'm not sure if you're saying that directly but that's the feeling I'm getting from this.
I'm happy with games if I'm having fun while playing it. Simple enough. I don't care about story or gameplay, because I never divide it into sections like that. I just look at it and play it, and if it's enjoyable, I like it. Graphics and stuff are just additional. At least, that's my opinion.
And Ray, stop hating on people with no good reason other than your opinion.

Why I still really don't care, Ray:
What Kevak said.
Also, let's take two classic books:
Catcher In The Rye War and Peace
Just because Catcher came after War and Peace doesn't mean War and Peace is better than Catcher. They're different.
Also, it all comes down to taste.
For instance, my favorite type of game isn't CRPG.
Psst, Ray! i feel like you might be the hipster guy here.. You can't seem to move on from CRPGs from the 90s..

What a hypocrite... lol
Main character wakes up with amnesia and tries to find out what's up with his existence. Oh look... I can do that too.
I wont say it's better because they're different concepts, but believe it or not, the Mass Effect series. Don't believe me? Fuck you then, it's only your opinion. There's no article, no study, and no proof that one is better than the other. You only have your opinion that you shove down people's mouths with some authority you believe yourself to have. Your thoughts are not fact, and the sooner you realize that, the better.

At least, that's my opinion. And Ray, stop hating on people with no good reason other than your opinion. it might not be your fault, but casual gamers are ruining the industry. a few years ago, in the late 90s, when gaming was more of a niche market and other than some children most gamers were hardcore nerds, people had to make the best games, because those were the ones the nerds would play. people like bioware made games as complex as baldur's gate and neverwinter nights because the market wouldn't buy watered down casualized games. that's why in the 90s we got games like broodwar, fallout, baldur's gate and half life. to succeed, games had to be the best, otherwise, the highly educated (in terms of video games) market wouldn't buy it. now look at the industry today: infinity ward releases the same fps for the umpteenth time and it reaches record sales. bioware, once every nerd's favorite studio, now makes a glorified gears of war type game and fucking dragon age 2, which is so bad there's not even an analogy for it, and still has more success than ever. bethesda, after making the amazing morrowind, released that watered down crap oblivion, with no story, no landscapes, no dialog and imbalanced combat, and it was the elder scrolls' breakthrough game. fallout, my favorite franchise, got turned into elder scrolls with guns, and starcraft two, a game i had been waiting for for 12 years, playing 1 competitively for over 5, is also streamlined and casualized. why? because games don't have to be the best anymore. studios make their games more simple to appeal to casual gamers, and they have more success than they had when they made amazing complex games. and we, the people who have been called nerds for decades for playing video games, are having our hobby ruined by 12 year olds and frat boys.

Yeah, let's stick with that. All of this is basically just opinions. And you can complain all you want about games these days, but it really depends where you look.
I think the best games are those that have a simplistic basic idea, but it can be complicated if you want.
Such as Portal or Minecraft.

If it was, it would probably still be indie (Valve doesn't do casual)

Yeah, let's stick with that. All of this is basically just opinions. And you can complain all you want about games these days, but it really depends where you look. I think the best games are those that have a simplistic basic idea, but it can be complicated if you want. Such as Portal or Minecraft. I believe that the best games are those that allow you to input your own little bit of "reality" into that reality of the game. Minecraft is centered around that aspect of individual development - the development originated by the player rather than those who created the game. Portal allows you to create your own paths to complete a particular scenario and many times, because of the multiple ways of solving these challenges, it allows the player to determine that much more for themselves as to how they will go about playing the game. I enjoy these games for those reasons and Portal 2 will only go to build upon the possibilities it introduced in the original. I hear a bunch of arguing in this thread over the "casualness" of the game. There should be a bit more of an emphasis on originality of gameplay. It may just be me, but I don't see much of a debate if we were to discuss the originality of Portal 2. Great games break boundaries and introduce new ideas - ideas that people like and will replicate. How can you not include Portal among that category?

Your long debates are tiring me... That game should be released already so that you won't trouble my head. I am getting tired of watching the posts here. Stop fighting in the wrong section. Make a thread about video games in the Debate Club and go freaky. Not here. This thread is about the release of the game. We don't want the opinion about it, I mean, we can't have it, no one really played it yet. Just go all "yay", are we clear? Play nice.
