More people should be doing this. The amount of people already doing this in one hour a year has saved enough energy to power a third world country. I for one will take part.

I'm kinda guessing that third world countries need very very little electrisity and the energy saved isn't sent to these countries, it is kept by the national grid until it is needed somewhere else. so in reality we are not saving third world countries, not even the environment, godforbid we start talking about global warming. This is intresting, during these events i run round in my house turning everything that requires electrisity on. Turning everything off will put my house to a standstill and no work would get done, also on a saturday night i have better things to do then sit in a dark room doing absoulutley nothing.

I will be doing this. Anyway why does it say 8:30 central time? It says 8:30 local time on the offical website. This would mean it dosn't matter where you live, when its 8:30, you power off.

Okay here is my look at Earth Hour I think we should not have "Earth Hour". I bellieve we should have " Earth Minute". Earth Minute would go like this For 60 days of the year you would take one minute of of your day and do something for the earth. ie - turning out the lights, picking up garbage, or turning off all things that use power in your home. My hope with this idea is that people would make it a habit in their lives and then it might turn into two minutes a day then three minutes etc. What do you think?

I personally think we can keep doing this stuff until were blue in the face but until the governments actually do something to dramatically help these 'third world countries' then you might as well not bother.
But I agree at least we are doing something ourselves to help the world. You never know one day we might need help ourselves.

My hope with this idea is that people would make it a habit in their lives and then it might turn into two minutes a day then three minutes etc. What do you think? In keeping with the values of Pogotribe I'm gonna say well done for thinking creatively and impossibly big. It's an interesting idea but I'll tell you why I don't think it will work. one minute having everything turned off equals several minutes turning thing off and on again and it's difficult enough to get the public to do something like earth hour once in a year, let alone every day. The big changes needed to combat the climate crisis will only come from things that don't require a lot of conscious effort and don't impede on the public's everyday habits. The amount of physical work required will almost certainly be counter productive. I like the analogy of trying to fill a swimming pool. If filling the pool is like combating climate change then what your suggesting is like trying to fill it with a teaspoon. Even if the whole country does it, it's still really impractical and inefficient. What we really need is new technology and big budget solutions. A large hose. I'm not entirely sure what form the large hose takes though.
