I wanted to see what people would think if we implemented a "thank" system here, if at all possible. There is a simple "thank" button at the bottom of every post and if the user said something helpful, funny, or something you particularly agree with, then you thank them.

I think I saw a add on for this on proboards support. I will look for it again.
Not sure if it was actually real or just a suggestion.

That would rawck. I saw something like this on another forum called rep (short for reputation). There was a little green bar under everyone's name. Everyone could award people rep and it would fill up their green rep meter. If implemented correctly, more rep means more respect.

Silverrida Ohh I see what you're saying now. @conjoin Yes, I've seen that on a different forum too. I thought it was a neat idea.

I really do not like the idea of rep. ProBoards has it, but no.
Absolutely not.

I really do not like the idea of rep. ProBoards has it, but no. Absolutely not. I can see the downsides to it, since on the forum I saw it on, you could also give people negative rep, which could create bullying. :/

It'd be abused.
...etc.

I don't see how it could be abused. The forum I was talking about wasn't comprised of the most civilized people, and it wasn't abused.

ALRIGHT.
Yes, it is okay in theory. I'm just concerned that the people will abuse it, like Bree said. They'll "thank" posts that are trollin' or just funny. Being funny is awesome, but if this is just a way to like posts then I don't see the point. I would like it if there were a way to use it only to encourage people to contribute helpful ideas. I still don't think we need it, though.

@ zAk - do you not see a problem with Bree reading your mind? I would think it might scare you? @ Bree - does it not scare you that you possibly read zAk's mind?
@the idea - I'll agree that it would totally get abused, and also if someone posts something that more people disagree with than agree with it could lead to a massive amount of negative 'rep' that would be discouraging. if you want to thank someone because they posted something worth reading, then it's not that hard to respond to the post saying "that was awesome, ty for posting" and in effect produces the same thing as a thank button would.

A thank system wouldn't be effective imo, but I think a rep system could be implemented very well. It it gets abused, we could always take it down...

"thank you" systems are the worst systems EVER!
What good is the thank you system gonna do for us??

I haven't seen a single argument against it yet. I've just seen "NO! It's bad!" Which isn't an argument. Here's what I wrote about it here on another thread: Has anyone ever been on a website called eRepublic? It's an online game, I only played for a few days, but there were various politcal parties who were competing for votes, as a result every new member was welcomed at least once by every party and sent free stuff and had the game explained to them and everyone was really helpful and nice. In the end when I left i sent out everything i had collected to everyone who had helped me. It was a boring game, but there was a strong community, the problem is they only did good things for the imaginary game world. Do you think some kind of competition would be good? Do you think something similar could benefit us? Some kind of point system that awards good behavior? A lot of advice forums have a "thanks" button that you press if the person helps you. Having a really high thanks rating is a badge of honor. I know people don't do it for points. But it's nice to be appreciated, (my mom used to work for a charity with a load of wonderful kind good people, who were constantly having arguments and/or leaving because they didn't feel appreciated, and maybe they weren't.. outside of the group they couldn't help people as much, but inside the group they felt miserable and demotivated.) It is set into human nature that we love accumulating things, money, points in video games, rocks, knives and forks (we only need 1 for each person living in the house and 1 for each friend who might visit at a time, yet how many do we have?) and i think it'll get people addicted to doing something they want to do anyway. Like leveling up! There was a TED video about making real life more like video games in order to motivate people, they gave statistics about the amount of hours people have spent playing WoW, and why? They give loads of reasons: www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.htmlAmazing talk, very relevant to what people are trying to do here i think.
