Erm, yes, Jocelyn is correct... I don't think Dan intended for us to change the world in this next year, directing him on what to do (although, we may... that is yet to be determined). Dan intended to demonstrate that a community can successfully run things far better than a few representatives with an agenda can. The point of the project is to prove that we can run Dan's live better than he could run it himself. That we could run YouTube better than YouTube could. That we could run the United States of America better than Congress. And so on and so forth. The few amount of people who understand this project is astonishing, and quite sad. ;_; To think, a quirky 16-year-old girl called "Jelly" understands this project than THE ALMIGHTY, NEVER WRONG, ABRASIVE, JUDGEMENTAL BOMBMANIAC. Whoa! Again, you guys really should wait for more details before writing novels to Dan. In my personal opinion, he should have included some of these details in his presentation, but instead he wanted to tell his life story or something... either way, you should wait. Could not have said it better myself. But i can't explain my thoughts very easily most of the times. So yeah. Exactly what she said. And yes, i was thinking the same thing that it astonishes me how few people understand it when it seems like the ones i would expect to the most, Asher, don't.

There, bomb. Reread my post... and this time, respond properly, instead of picking out ONE sentence and acting like it negates my entire point. You always do that. Seriously. wtf.
thx.

ok bree, fine. i understand what dan is trying to do with his project. it is an idea he has been indirectly discussing for a while. my main problem with his project, is that it has such limited potential. can youtube be run better by the community than by youtube itself? maybe...can dan's life be run better by the community than by him? maybe...can a corporation be run better by a community than by a board of directors? maybe...can a soccer team be run better by the fans than by the managers? well, apparently yes.
can a country be run better by it's citizens than by it's government...? no. absolutely not. do you really know enough to vote on lets say...the healthcare bill? setting you aside...do you think your average joe knew enough to vote on the healthcare bill? would your average citizen have enough information, possibly classified information to vote on the patriot act? would you have enough information to know whether or not to approve military action anywhere in the globe? do you know enough to vote on tax increases or decreases? do you really know enough to vote one way or another?
or do you know what the media tells you. do you know what your biased news source tells you is true. do you know only what you hear gossiped about at the water cooler. again, i'm not directing this specifically at you bree...but there is a reason we are a republic and not a true democracy. the people just don't know enough to vote on laws, nor do they want to. ask your average citizen if he or she wants to read a 2000 page bill, with all the amendments added on, and then vote on it...they would say know. they do not know, and they do not care. they would prefer top elect representatives who should vote according to the will of their constituents.
whether or not the system as it is is perfect is irrelevant. there is always room for improvement. we will never be a true democracy, because people don't care. they don't care to know enough of what they should to make truly informed decisions. moreover, there are times where they CAN'T know. if the CIA made all of it's top secret intelligence available to the public, they would essentially render themselves pointless. some things MUST remain secret. what happens then? what happens when the information absolutely CANNOT be made available?
like i said, Dan's idea is nice...up to a point. it has a ceiling. and because of that ceiling, it's a little disappointing.

I think it's funny. Most of the younger(14-18) members see potential, and have hope. While most of the older(19+) think they were let down. Not true for everyone, but I think our brains are wired differently. I know I personally didn't put Dan into a god form, because I could see the truth. I mean some people were thinking Dan was going to singlehandedly end world hunger. He is still only a 20 year old kid.
Bomb, you are saying that Dan has let us down because he wasted the opprotunity to utilize us. So what's stopping you from saying, "Why don't we fix the world? Why don't we create our own project (noble cause anyone?)" We say this isn't a Dan brown fan club, that we don't need him as our leader. but once dan dosent lead us, we can't do anything.

i never viewed dan as a god, or even close. and i know he can't singlehandedly end world hunger.
^that was the point.

It's still a fantastic idea. It may not be able to work with a country but it would improve many forms of decision making.

I can't imagine what you thought it could be. This exceeded my expectations for the project and was more amazing than i could have imagined. Were you expecting him to end world hunger cause if so i could see how this would be a disappointment.

What do you expect out of this project? I keep seeing the words succeed and fail, yet I have not seen markers for each. How would this succeed? Dan not die? How would it fail? Dan be broke and jobless?
I expected something, i dunno, along the lines of what he told us. "may change the face of the world or at least youtube" Umm, he's been doing the MM thing for a while and I'm not impressed. Nor is anyone else impressed that I have seen. World shaking, experience changing? No, we are running the Truman Show. That is the truth. Deal with it.

i honestly have no idea...the way i saw it though, it could have had direct real world impact. i mean...look at what he has to work with. a forum of approximately 3000 people, a youtube following of close to 250,000, and various contacts in good places. i was hoping his project would be something that would use what we have already learned...use the bonds we have made as a community, and the resources at his disposal to do something meaningful in the real world. what we have here on the internet is nice...but the internet can only take us so far. then internet cannot feed people. the internet cannot cure disease. the internet cannot fix problems in the educational system. the internet cannot solve social problems.
in order for such problems to be changed, real world action must be taken, and i suppose i expected, or at least HOPED that it would be a crossover from the internet, youtube, and SPOTM into some kind of real world project. something we can work on offline, in the real world. i'm not sure of any specifics...but like i said, i just expected more from what he has to work with.

well i was disappointed when i found out what it was, but i expect it to be a moderate "success" as in maybe a few corporations start using the system and maybe gets a little media coverage. I agree on the rest of your letter though, mostly
