So.. the question is.. do you pirate music? What do you think about pirating music (ie. downloading off the internet)? Personally, I NEVER EVER NEVER pirate music. Point 1) I like to give the artists something. The fact is, if everybody downloaded an artists music, even though he/she/they would be famous, they would get NO MONEY for it. That doesn't sound fair. So I like to give the artist something . Point 2) I love the physical copy and all the cover art and stuff. I don't know why, it just seems more fun to me

Me neither, and albums are awesome. Like I said, you are not a fan, if you steal the music : D

I mainly pirate music, mostly because iTunes doesn't have FLAC files. Occasionally I'll buy some vinyl or independant albums.

There was a controversy with Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich and music pirating around ten years ago.
From Wikipedia: "At the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, Ulrich appeared in a skit with host Marlon Wayans that blasted the idea of using Napster to share music. Marlon played a college student sitting in his dorm room listening to Metallica's "I Disappear". Ulrich walked in and asked for an explanation. On receiving Wayans' excuse that using Napster was just "sharing", Lars retorted that Marlon's idea of sharing was "borrowing things that were not yours without asking." He called in the Metallica road crew, who proceeded to confiscate all of Wayans' belongings, leaving him almost nude in an empty room. Napster creator Shawn Fanning responded later in the ceremony by presenting an award wearing a Metallica shirt, saying, "I borrowed this shirt from a friend. Maybe, if I like it, I'll buy one of my own.""

I answered a lot here. There are other, more sentimental issues with pirating: Kids today will only ever know digital audio. Analog sounds more authentic to the recording than digital (unless it was recorded, digitally) and more warming. Honestly, go to a thrift store and check out some cassette tapes. They're unbelievably cheap, hipster chic, warming and dreamy, reliable (if a digital file or CD starts skipping, it's unlistenable, but if a cassette has an issue, you can straighten its tape or just deal with a little fuzz), possibly worth something (I'm pretty sure that almost any cassette tape by The Cure is worth upwards of $25, yet can be found for 25¢), and not a challenge to digitize (feed the headphone jack of a player into the microphone jack of a computer, hit record on a program and hit play on on the cassette). I'm also worried that digital media is taking the fun out of finding music. You used to have to look for this rare stuff and make an adventure of getting the info. Tons of DIY bands put out cassettes and vinyls that once had to be traded to even be obtained. Music is losing that mystery and becoming more personalized listening. You listen alone, now.

I have listened to a few vinyls, and they are clearly a bit better. I would love to own a record player and some records some day

Pirating is for noobs, unless you are downloading your favorite show or a crappy movie based off that show.

I buy most of my music, but always in digital format. It's so much easier than using CD's.

This is a good read. Pirating music doesn't hurt the artist as much as it hurts the record label and the RIAA. Artist make more money from concerts and merchandise than album sales. When you buy music online, you are tied to the DRM software which denies fair use to the music you bought. So, would you rather have a free unrestricted file or a paid file that dictates where and how you listen to it?

CD's FTW. I still like them. They're fun to organize and btw, you can get a file off a CD and put it on a computer. ANY computer, actually. CD - 1 Buying Online - 0

I don't really bother anymore, there are plenty of alternatives like spotify (my favourite) last fm and other internet radio sites. If I had the money I would buy most of the music collection, unfortunately the ability to distribute non pop music has resulted in alienating large sections of the more dedicated music fans due it being made inaccessible and unaffordable
