SourceI'll give my opinion later, but first I want to hear yours. So, do you think MS is a dying consumer brand?

What OS are you using right now? debate is over. I'm actually using Ubuntu Linux 10.10. Debate is back up.

Yea, I'm using Windows. Only reason is because it's cheaper. New Mac computers are at least 3 times more expensive than new computers that run Microsoft Windows. But I would rather have a Mac. Although there are some applications or something that don't run on Macs. Which is another reason some people stick with Windows.
But I'd have to agree that Microsoft is a dying company. And Google and Apple will be taking a large portion of the market they used to dominate.

I'm perfectly happy with Windows - it does everything I want and need it to do. It's pretty much universal, and it's easy to fix yourself.
More to the point - you actually OWN your copy of Windows - unlike a Mac. Apple holds the right to break any of their products when you update if there's just one thing they don't like on it. Running bootcamp? Break the mac. Using a phone provider other then AT&T? Break the iPhone (unless you're in Canada - where that's against federal law, but I digress).
Besides, Microsoft will never die - government offices use it, businesses use it, offices use it - because it's cheap, and because it's universal.

To be honest, I've really on heard things from friends. The problems I have with Windows, they don't have. Like crashing for one. But the expense just isn't worth it right now. I can deal with the freezing and the occasional crash, and my 1 GB of ram which is increasingly not cutting it for me until I can afford a Mac.
Btw why do you ask? Do you not think Macs are better?

Er... Macs crash all the time.
Every Mac owner I know has problems with crashing, or viruses, or freezing at some point during the computer's life.
And unlike Windows, when a Mac crashes, you don't recover.

As of now it's just not important.

Yeah, but at least I can fix it when Windows crashes.
I've had nothing but problems with Macs - it's why I switched to Windows in the first place.

I will always back Microsoft it was my first computer and even though the company has had problems and is a bit behind they do have the government backing them most older buisnesses use windows OS and it is still much cheaper and the old idea that windows crashes all the time is not nearly as true.
Now there is a competitor that is on the rise... Google!!! yes they are cornering every market and even are developeing a OS meaning even apple will struggle when google hooks into there market. (dont be surprised when google makes an mp3 player that compeates with the ipod which is apples only saveing grace right now)
apple will live for a long time to though and even though i personaly hate the company i will admit they are one that will last. even though they will never truly beat out microsoft on there own.
in the end microsoft is just becoming stagnent and needs a new direction. they have alot still going for them but all they need is a new game system and they will once again own a market for a bit longer. now if microsoft messes up a bit then they could spiral but i doubt it.

Microsoft will survive. They just need Gates back as CEO again.
Or Maybe the Windows Phone OS will do a good amount of business.
Who knows, maybe Microsoft will run into trouble, and Apple will bail them out with the same $150,000,000 that MS gave Apple back in the 90s as a bailout.
Or maybe they'll make windows based on the Mac OS, rather then DOS-OH WAIT THAT WAS VISTA.
Grah - I'm going to back out of this. Mac vs PC debates always bring out my worst...

no your right aust microsoft has been a more stable and decent comapny than apple sence the begining and to see apple ever pull ahead would in turn make me and many others cry..
The thing is microsoft went into gameing and sony started compeating then apple who was a second rate nothing came out with the ipod and it sold big so for the first time microsoft had to play catch up but there product proved to be either more expencive or not as good and there battle wavered then apple used the revenue from the ipod to push there miserable excuse for computers and that forced microsoft to try to develop a new product hence the birth of the ugly baby vista. then everyone even google got into the phone market and with such saturation microsoft just doesn't stand a chance. the problem is unlike in there prime time they no longer have an edge or market all to there own. there for they are starting to slip up and make more risky manuvers. yes microsoft could fall but I dont belive it will happen withen my life time (or at least i really dont want to see it happen.)

I can deal with the freezing and the occasional crash, and my 1 GB of ram which is increasingly not cutting it for me until I can afford a Mac. Btw why do you ask? Do you not think Macs are better? Of course I think Macs are worse, then again I also build and maintain my own computers. My current computer has crashed maybe twice in the four years I have owned it, both the result of hardware difficulties. I admit that a Mac would not suffer from such issues but only because they wouldn't run the programs that caused the crashes. Apple does not let you alter hardware, the OS and they won't let you run an enormous number of programs. Believe it or not but Macs do crash and when they do, it's a fatal crash. Then you have to spend another 3,000$, or whatever they're up to these days, to get a new one. Let me make comparison for you, let's say you buy a 30,000$ motor vehicle and then suddenly the gas tank has a leak. You'll just patch it up or buy a new gas tank, right? Wrong, you have to buy a new vehicle, period. That's Apple's Consumer Policy in a nutshell.

Apple is more expensive, easier to use, has better customer service, and has less compatibility.
Windows is less expensive, often frustrating to use, and has very awful customer service, but no issues with compatibility.
Linux is completely free (save for the computer), requires a bit more knowledge of computers to use, and is open source and thus all around compatible.
Honestly, people pick this issue to just go around and insult people who don't have the same preference of operating system/hardware as they, themselves, do. It's amazing how quickly stereotypes of operating system users emerged. Well, actually, it's not, since it probably stems from the Mac advertisements.

Psst. Windows is an operating system that works on ALL computers, not a computer brand. Also Microsoft is company that makes applications for both macs and PCs as well and Microsoft runs on Windows. This topic seems to be riddled with confusion as to what Microsoft actually is.

This topic seems to be riddled with confusion as to what Microsoft actually is. That's a good point, but aren't other things competitors such as Apple and Google are doing Microsoft just isn't catching up with? Take the iPad as an example. MS hasn't shipped (or helped ship, they're a software company after all) anything that successful.
