I'm not saying that windows is awful, in fact I use it a lot. I do think that Microsoft has only two successful products, while apple has several. So I guess yes.

tablet pcs have been around for some time but apple somehow with all the hype for there company sold a crap product and did it well...some how the ipad ,which was just an ipod touch on steroids, sold better than any other tablet pc was more expencive and yet had less features and hardware than any other on the market. i dont understand how a company can say we have a new iphone and it was the same phone with minor updates that could have been patched through a download. the big problem for microsoft is the fact that they are no longer cornering a market. they nearly went uncontested in the computer world until 2000. now they have competition on every front. also just note that microsoft sales are up this quarter and the company is doing just fine. so uhh yeah cnn posted this money.cnn.com/2010/10/28/technology/microsoft_earnings/index.htmand then hours later this money.cnn.com/2010/10/27/technology/microsoft_pdc/index.htm

i don't see apple beating out Microsoft on its own... it is more likely google will smash all of them.
sadly this is a google world and we are just living in it.

One more thing - Microsoft can go at least 2 years without selling a single piece of software. Not one program, not one update, not one service call. No sales income what-so-ever.
That's just the reserve money they have.

^ yeah i like that... its a bit insane and eventualy they could feel pain but i truly feel that the amazing bill gates will not live to see the fall of his masterpiece..
sadly the way google is expanding and such and the fact that they are coming out with a OS soon means they will hold a portion of every market around even those most companies such as apple and microsoft wouldnt have even dreamed of. i mean one day we could see a google powered car... do you know how crazy that is... still apple and microsoft will probably live long and prosper.

All hail our Google overlords. LOL Also, Microsoft can't die. Apple: Mac OS iPod family Microsoft: Windows OS (People still use an OS that is two gens behind the current one[xp]) Zune family(not AS good but it still sells) Xbox family Word and other editing programs Windows Mobile OS(on some/most smartphones) Think about it, MS could live on xbox revenue alone.

Psst. Windows is an operating system that works on ALL computers, not a computer brand. Also Microsoft is company that makes applications for both macs and PCs as well and Microsoft runs on Windows. This topic seems to be riddled with confusion as to what Microsoft actually is. That's a good point, but aren't other things competitors such as Apple and Google are doing Microsoft just isn't catching up with? Take the iPad as an example. MS hasn't shipped (or helped ship, they're a software company after all) anything that successful. The IPad isn't software, it's hardware. Hardware is the physical stuff. Software are programs that run on your hardware. You don't ship software sense there is nothing to ship, you download it. You can get software in the store in the form of CDs but usually with newer programs the CDs are no longer needed to run the program after it's been downloaded into your system. This is the difference between hardware and software. As well as the CDs you can buy at the store software can also simply be downloaded off the internet. Apple isn't really a competitor sense Apple makes Hardware, Hardware while requires Software to work, Software which is made by Microsoft. Google, is simply a search engine as well as some other web sites such as YouTube which is also run by Google. I don't think there are any actual products, hardware or software, that Google makes but I'm not entirely familiar with every company that is tied with them. Basically they're not competitors sense every company you mentioned all rely on each other to function. You can't have one without the other. Google's competitors would actually be other search engines such as Yahoo, other browsers such as FireFox, and other video share sites that compete with YouTube. (I can't think of any other sites like YouTube off hand which is good for them.) Microsoft's main competitor is actually Linux not Apple. While Apple's competitors would be Alien Ware, Dell, Toshiba, and other top Hard Ware making companies. Now these names just came up on quick internet searches for "Who are [company name here]s competitors" Linux actually makes both Hardware and Software regularly while Microsoft has little Hardware to speak of. I checked out the products sections on both their web sites. That being said Linux is hardly a household name at the moment. When looking threw their site they had allot of information on future projects but little in actual products yet they are the biggest competitors for Microsoft so I don't think Microsoft is going anywhere any time soon. At least not till Linux makes a bigger name for itself.

People still use an OS that is two gens behind the current one[xp] XP Is two gens behind the current one or are you ignoring the existence of Windows Vista and Windows 7. (Windows 7 is actually the latest version of Windows not Windows XP.) That being said Widows Vista was a major flop among gamers and Windows 7 came almost immediately after it. While Vista is perfectly fine for office use there were some major programming glitches that interfered with many MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft and City of Heroes/Villains. I don't care for WoW so I don't know what the exact problem was in that game but many players of CoH/V reported several problems with Windows Vista interfering with the game's user interface. These problems ranged from minor problems with in game chat not working which some people got around by using other programs to communicate such as TeamSpeak and Vent. Other more serious problems included the interface not appearing at all making it nearly impossible to play the game. It's like trying to play blind, the interface is there, you can interact with it, you just can't see it. And if you don't know what I'm talking about a User Interface is that thing in games that has all your controls for the game including your powers, your map, your missions, and even the menu to allow you to log off. So many of these people were forced to reboot their computers as the only way to log off the game. I don't know if anything is seriously wrong with windows 7 like that but I stick with my XP. It works perfectly and I think, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's no reason to get a new windows operating system unless I some day run into a program I want that needs something higher than XP to run on. (though if any program needs Vista I'll wait for something better or just install it on my lap top sense I use it as an office computer not a gaming machine.)

Microsoft is not dead for 2 reasons:
1) No matter how crappy, useless, or unstable it EVER becomes...It's still cheaper than water.
2) There isn't a soul on earth who doesn't know how to use Windows.

well i had made a list of things each company are appart of but sadly after an hour my computer decided to tell me to go to hell and shut down (this was due to being unpluged and low on power and my ignoreing the flashing power thingy) ohh well now to correct you rialvestro
your info would be correct if we where back in the year 2000 or so... however... apple uses there own OS and has in the past few years sence there jump back into the ring made there own versions of all of microsofts software. apple is not just a hardware company even though they used to be they are spreading there wings and have made things like a browser called sufari there OS mentioned before which they call mac os. they basicly lock down there products for the most part and are a bit too controling but they are a company not a country so everyone just ignores these minor injustices.
google as you so blantanly stated as a serch engine is not just so.. while obviously google started and is still the biggest and best search engine on earth they also have there browser, there software that mimics the microsoft office brand and there global mapping that is worth billions on its own. google is also working on its own free OS and has steped up into every field of communication. google has expanded into nearly every technological market known and is now a major competitor with apple and MS due to there pushing into these older companies fields
then you have the mother company MS MS has its famous OS and many small projects but if you dont remember was the only company with a browser of any sort for some time... they also have many other things and are the creators of bing which was the slightly failed attempt to push google out of the way before it was too late.
you may not have noticed but in the past ten years these three companies no matter how big or old they are are now on nearly the same level and if not complete competitors they due butt heads on many fronts..
apple and MS are the olddest rivals and google is makeing there way to the ring. so uhh yeah.. if this isnt enough i will give you that list of everything each company has there hands in and we can go from there or you could research a bit better... just saying...
edit:linux is not a competitor due to there freeware ways and such they where the closest thing 10 years ago but now they have been pushed behind and all of those future projects you may have saw have been on the table and worked on for years with slow progress compared to the other companies this is due to linux being a comunity no ads free open sourced whatever they are... also there OS's are more complex and not at all main stream... never count them as competition to MS or apple or google cause they really arent.

ERR, Zune doesn't sell. If you want to add Word, then you have to add Mac's pre-installed software, so I guess that sells. This list will be revised as we go.
So REVISED:
Apple: Mac OS (Successful) iPods (Successful) iPhones (Successful) iPads (Successful) Pages and the iWork suite (Successful) iLife (Successful) We'll see about Apple TV App Store (Successful)
Microsoft: Windows (Successful, also growing 2.5x slower than mac.) XBox (Successful) Zune (Moderately Successful, not quite) Windows Phones (Not successful) Microsoft Office (Successful) Microsoft Surface (NOT SUCCESSFUL) Internet Explorer (Dying.) Windows Mail (Not Successful) Windows Live (Not successful ANYMORE.) Microsoft Agent (Huh?) AutoCollage 2008 (What's that?) Microsoft Expression Studio (Again, what is this?) Bing (While successful for now, the market share isn't growing any.) Windows Movie Maker and Paint (Successful, but I think you can agree: The worst pieces of software for the video and pictures.) Encarta: Something called Wikipedia replaced it..
If you have something to add, I can't think of anything else, but if you have something, add it.
Bonus:
Google:
Search (SUCCESSFUL) Maps/Earth (Successful) YouTube/Videos (Successful) Gmail (Successful) Translate (Successful) Blogger (Successful) Chrome (Successful) Google TV (Not Successful) Chrome OS (Not successful so far) Google Voice (Not Successful) Google Wave (Not Successful) Docs (Successful) Nexus One (Not Successful)

When it reaches final, vendors will finally start installing it on netbooks. Google Docs is pretty successful. Nexus One might not be successful, but Android is (many smartphones have it, and their app store might not be as big as Apple's, but it is pretty big).

Maybe you might want to clear something up. You said all of my information is 10 years old but I pulled up all of that information off their web sites the same day that I posted it here. Now maybe you are right about Google because I didn't look too much into everything they have their hand in but as for the other things, all the information is very recent. Microsoft's own web site comments that Linux, who I vaguely knew existed but knew nothing of what the company actually was before I wrote my last post, is their biggest competitor. Now why would Microsoft list a company as their biggest competitor like that if they weren't, as you say, a competitor at all? I kind of doubt that big name companies like this would keep their web site so hugely out of date as you claim my information is 10 years old that would mean that non of their web sites have been updated for the last 10 years which might be true for Linux but I doubt it's true for the web sites of both apple and Microsoft.
