i will admit you might be right about the linux thing... Linux is open source free ware and even though it has put a monkey wrench in the workings of MS for some time linux has only pulled the programers and hobiests to them so far which is a small number.. on the other hand apple has pulled many of the young rich and less than computer savy to there side which does leave MS with a problem on the OS and browser front.
the thing is you might have been looking only at the windows site which would have linux as there main competitor but MS is not just windows but a multi level corporation that spans most of the web and world. they have been tied in sence the begining..
so maybe its not that your research was old but misinformed on what the topic is acctualy about.

Just to clear things up, the web sites I was looking at was in fact Apple.com, Microsoft.com, and Linux.com the last one I only went to because Microsoft directed me to it as I was looking about their site trying to find who their leading competitor was. I did just double check this however and while I did look at Microsoft.com for a list of their products the web site that directed me to Linux I actually misread as it was actually Microsoft-watch.com

I have to use macs all the time in school and they are really bad in the fact that they are unreliable and do not have efficient way to use shortcuts and if they crash it is not easy to get them to work again but they do have a good capture card but it is not worth the up to 5000 dollars you may spend

Keyboard shortcuts, desktop shortcuts? Your school macs are years old apparently.

Yeeaaahh.. My Mac is awesome, compared to windows machines I've used.. There's that confused comment again. Windows is an operating system not a machine. Your mac could in fact itself run on Windows. In fact my elementary school only used Apple computers. They just started using the IMac which was the newest mac at the time in 1999 which was a year before I started high school. The IMacs we used ran on Windows 95 operating systems.

this is basicly a apple vs MS debate that is going to end badly so for now a step back before bad things happen.

bah. i can't find who said the quote that says pretty much everything I'm about to say..... well i'll just include the ideas in my thoughts here.
Google is taking over the "information overlord" status (google has developed a car that drives it'self that has already been put on the road(i can send you the video of it if you wish)) we no longer care about our privacy and thus have given into convenience.
Short Desc: "they know everything"
Apple products are known for their graphics so they are going to eventually be the gaming/art machines and are going to fight with Google to be the Social device/application overlords. but with their demand on DRM thy might be out the window also.
Short Desc: "they are pretty"
the "Linux Brand" isn't a brand so it's attracting the "rebels". programmers choose it cause they can personalize and know what's going on, Serious Business types choose it for it's security (even M$ uses Unix on it's servers lol-- last verified 4 years ago), and the power users/scientific community enjoy the price, and is only as big as you need it. so less is wasted on a bloat (basic installations WITH a GUI can be run directly off a CD (less than 750MB)) Linux "brands" can get a foot hold anywhere even if they aren't #1 in it simply for the fact people like choices
Short Desc: "They are secure"
Microsoft Really has no place to go. They are good at forcing people to use thier stuff (all college courses i saw this year includes MS office 2007 or 2010), and spent all their time preferring 30 million somewhat-satisfied customers over 5 million happy customers..and really that's what you get for stealing an idea.. But the idea paid off.. everything they try will carry the idea of "I'm okay with being sub-par" so as a BRAND it needs some real overhaul to survive.
Short Desc: "They don't care"

Microsoft: 27.85 Mkt cap 238.27B
Apple: 320.36 Mkt cap 293.87B
Apple's growing faster. Compare this to a few months ago.

Apple is expanding faster because they resort to dirty marketing tactics that even Enron would feel is in poor taste. They market pointless things because they know that people will buy them regardless of function. Just look at the iPad - it's just a giant iPod touch.
Also - I seem to remember a comment about how the Windows 7 phone was unsuccessful - didn't it, like, just come out?

I have an iPad. It feels just different than an iPhone or iPod Touch. BTW, the post you read probably was about the previous windows phones. I assure you it will be unsuccessful.

Apple is expanding faster because they resort to dirty marketing tactics OMG LOL! Remember those Windows 7 commercials that would always end with "I'm ______ and Windows 7 was my idea"? The kicker is that everything those commercials mention are all things macs could do 8 years ago! Aaaaah I'm getting off topic. To answer the thread topic - Naw, Microsoft isn't going anywhere. It's cheap and everyone knows how to use it.

Er. I HAD a Mac 8 years ago, and it sure couldn't do everything those commercials said.
Regardless, I'm leaving this. My question has been answered.
