My favorites Apples in Stereo Virtually anything that has Jack White Fall Out Boy Death Cab for Cutie Hot Hot Heat
Basically most things other than that I probably won't listen to on a regular basis.
Anyone else like singing to music while your listening just for fun even though you know you're bad at singing? :L

Three things I have a theory. I think that during any time period that there is good music and bad music. As time passes, bad music is forgotten. Good music is kept around. So hopefully 30 years from now, there won't be My Chemical Romance or Justin Beiber on classic rock radio. There will only be the cream of the crop. Sorry if I come off as some angry fan-boy kid, but I don't see how My Chemical Romance is bad. And also, it doesn't even take 30 years, NO ONE is talking about the Jonas Brothers anymore, right? They used to be the SHIRT for all those little highschool girls and now everyone's forgotten them and it hasn't even been a year.

They are much better than any Shirt from the Disney Channel. I picked 30 years randomly. I hope the whole world forgets about Miley by tomorrow.

i like music thats no longer around. led zeppelin was without a doubt one of the most talented bands ever. i dont know them personally, so i cant judge them as people, but as musicians they were brilliant. i cant think of a single musician today who comes close to jon paul jones, jon bonham, jimmy page, or robert plant.
musicians of today seem to have lost their talent. look at lady gaga. her music is horrible, and im willing to be most people only like her because she is so "out there." she's turning into another ozzy -- only difference was that ozzy could sing.
as technology grows, i think music will die. listen to jack white. almost no effects, but brilliant music. jimi hendrix, jimmy page, jeff beck, eric clapton, john bonham, neil pert, geddy lee -- im having a hard time believing any musicians will come close to them. i know that there are a lot of progressive bands with a lot of talent, and probably more underground stuff that i havent heard, but theyre missing something -- the ability to tie all different kinds of music (blues, country, classical, rock, etc) together into one brilliant song.
this is just my opinion, and im sure its probably wrong to some degree.

I was thinking about this earlier today. I work at McDonalds and while I was working, I noticed a younger high school kid wearing a Def Leppard shirt. I began trying to think of a band in our generation that might be printed as a "vintage" tshirt and worn by high school kids thirty years from now. Nothing came to mind.
I like that idea. What will be on "vintage" shirts in the future? I quickly scrolled through my iTunes. Nothing jumped out... that is sad.

I think that most mainstream pop music you can hear on the radio is bad, but this applies to earlier periods as well. Every once in I while I hear a decent song on mainstream radio, but this is rare. Electronic music is often done poorly in mainstream music, but electronic music can also be done very well (probably the best example is Radiohead's Kid A). I love a lot of today's less mainstream music (Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers, Deerhoof, and Grizzly Bear are some of my faves) so I don't think you can generalize about music "these days" (nor can you ever generalize about music). I also think you can't generalize about a genre of music (like saying that all rap is bad). The truth is that there will always be good music, great music, and horrible music that is extremely popular for some reason. Oh, and I agree that the Black Eyed Peas suck.

I go for the last option. Even thou you give a good variety of options in the end this poll is assuming that all music nowadays is the same, and that's not true, not even for pop. I like music, I like old music, new music, old music made new, old styles that have evolve, new styles that are like old, etc... I think you focus too much on the "mainstream" music, there has to be at least one or two radio stations that play decent music. And, there is decent music nowadays. Maybe you're just not looking in the right place. That said: Have you notice how most of the really mainstream pop bands sound all like the same? Oh, and, Have you listened to "reggeaton"? I got a tip for you, DON NOT. I'd also like to add that not all electronical music is bad, there is some pretty cool stuff on that genre, maybe you can search for good 8-bit (Bitpop, Chiptune, whatever) music there's some pretty good stuff up there. To say that it "sounds not like music anymore" is, at least to me, really wrong, music is music, the fact that some kinds of music are different to others doesn't make them less music...(?). In the end we have to accept that music is a subjective topic, all kind of people like all kind of music, and music is constantly changing and evolving, the problem is that most of the so called "mainstream" shows us very poor examples of the evolution of music. I know I had more stuff to say but in the middle of writing this I had to stop and eat dinner, so after that I lost some ideas...

I hate most new music, but Lady Ga-Ga is freaking amazing. I don't like her radio stuff, but when it's just her and a piano, magic happens.
That sounded odd.

I cannot read all of the posts in this thread at the moment as most are very long, and I am sorry for submitting a post without seeing if people agree or disagree, but I need to add my two cents.
Today's music is horrendous. It spans 3 genres, in a very poor way, when those 3 genres, mainly R&B, Hip Hop, and Rap, are already bastardizations of real music in the first place. I have a huge rant on how rap formed and why it is horrible and I may post it later, but for right now suffice it to say that I hate modern music and fear the direction it's going in. I actually think we need more bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor because that gets back into what music truly is.

I thought we were all about embracing it? Her music videos are awesome, so creative and original. Which is more than I can say for the music.. but it's catchy and really 2010. She's really got the whole fame and image thing worked out! And she's not a victim of it like most of the blonde superstars from recent years who were basically abused and paraded about like meat. She's in complete control, she's the one that says, okay? You want meat? Here you go.

What you're talking about is todays pop-music, what the charts like.. I listen to a lot of young bands and DJ's who make awesome, creative music an who expand their knowledge, use different styles,...

I like music, but my tastes are really shallow. I'm just one of those people who if someone said "Everyone's hear of it/them!" I'd raise my hand and say "I haven't." I agree with this. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan either. Some of my friends say "I wouldn't be able to get through the day without music, I don't know how anyone could." But I could, it's just entertainment for me, like watching a tv show.

I like that idea. What will be on "vintage" shirts in the future? I quickly scrolled through my iTunes. Nothing jumped out... that is sad. Just an idea, but I was thinking that maybe that has less to do with a lack of musical talent and more to do with the availability of music. What I mean is, back in the day before the internet, music was less available, and so generally people listened to whatever they could find easily, which was whatever played on the radio. Now because of the internet there's a greater variety of music that is easily accessible. I think that since there's a lot more variety it makes it harder to find one band that nearly everyone enjoys and that defines its generation.
