Hey,
I am a big fan of music. But I dislike todays music you can hear on the radio...its all electronical and sounds not like music anymore... listen to some songs from the 1990-2005 period and decide. One big example about this is The Black Eyed Peas. If you have the time, you should listen to their songs from their oldest all the way up to their newest.... And decide about todays music...
of course this is My opinion, but I think there will be a lot of people who agree with me...
So check out the poll!!

Yeah, pop and modern music has gone in quality recently.
I like music, but my tastes are really shallow. I'm just one of those people who if someone said "Everyone's hear of it/them!" I'd raise my hand and say "I haven't."

Today's music? Like, music produced recently? That's an incredibly broad generalization.

Probably belongs in the polls forum, not really a debate.
As for me, there's very little music I've cared for since the early 80's, and I wasn't even born then lol.

If you mean the mainstream music, then yeah, it's very questionable as to why people like it. Some of it is okay (guilty, lady gaga is okay) but some of it is terrible (AHEMBIEBERAHEM). I'm the kind of person who... doesn't like other people who say "It's sucks I hate it it's the worst music ever". Well... I don't hate them but it bothers me when they say it. For all music, it's a matter of opinion of whether they like it or not, and since it is a matter of opinion, I believe you can't really say they music is terrible. I say the music is good, but it just isn't my type. ANYWAYS That's not where I was trying to go. I was gonna say... did you mean just mainstream music or everything in general? Because I listen to a lot of indie stuff, and as of recently, a lot of them have been great (Ex: the new vampire weekend cd. Not so much indie category anymore now that I think it's become super popular, but it was). So it really depends on the genre I think, if you like pop, then you like pop. If you like 80's music then you like 80's music. I think you are specifying on recent pop music, which is what makes up most of the mainstream stuff. Oh gosh, I was gonna go into some other stuff, but then I figured I've kind of ranted enough. Basically: The music of today is good and bad, depending on the genre and depending on the person.

I love metal, industrial, some rap, System of a Down(they are their own section), and some rap (not the "bad" stuff) to give specific examples of the kinds of music that make me want to hang myself. Country just all country is depressing to me in some way or another. Bad rap such as but not limited to anything pertaining to drugs/gangs/other illegal or ill advised activities. I don't mind classical/folk/other types of music but I just dont absolutely love them. Examples of metal that I like include Zao, Dark Moor, Kamelot, Gamma Ray, and DragonForce. Examples of Industrial that I like include Suicide Commando and Death Stars. Examples of Rap that I like include Epik High(they're South Korean). Other than that nothing more to say other than all statements in this post are based on my opinion and not scientific fact(except that Country = Depressing they proved that on Manswers).

It's kind of ridiculous that Lady Gaga got her own spot in the poll, as if she's her own genre...

It's kind of ridiculous that Lady Gaga got her own spot in the poll, as if she's her own genre... Gotta agree with that, Gaga is not a genre, no offense to her or anything but if Journey isn't a Genre, then Gaga sure as heck isn't Um..I really do like a lot of music, I like classic rock, but I also enjoy most modern music and with the exception or rap, I'm fine with electronically produced music, I mean, yeah a lot of it is made by machines but that's like saying MysteryGuitarMan isn't a musician, it's all music, and I have no complaints

Mainstream music doesn't really appeal to me as much as it used to, but I still like music being made today. I'm into a lot of pop/punk, rap and a little bit of indie.
For pop/punk I like bands like Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong and A Day To Remember.
Rap, I like Drake and Jay-Z, basically anyone with good metaphors and NO, Lil Wayne is not on that list. Honestly after the first 10 albums about how much he smokes and bangs chicks and shoots people, I think I get it.
For indie, I like Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, Phoenix. The good guys haha. I think I'll put Ben Folds on that list too, seeing as he doesn't fit anywhere.
But on the other hand, I still know all the current "radio" songs. I mean I don't sit around and listen to the radio, but I don't live under a rock lol. What if I go to a party and I don't know any songs? Couldn't dance, wouldn't know the beat.
So yeah, I like music.

I really love music. I can't go anywhere without my iPod, I'm always looking for upcoming gigs that I can go to because I love listening to a talented band live, in a crowd of people who are all as excited as I am. Buuuut. Most of the artists on the radio and in the charts at the moment are - quite frankly - a load of rubbish! There are just so many pretty faces with hardly any talent who have no idea how to write proper songs. They have no lyrical talent, repetitive melodies, and are always inside the genre of Pop, or R&B. I especially hate Lady Gaga. Now the only way she is making money is by making songs that are so repetitive that they easily get stuck in peoples heads, and wearing STUPID costumes and acting all interesting in interviews with that stupid teacup and saucer. If she just wore jeans and a t-shirt and didn't spend all her time setting up stupid publicity stunts and just stood at a microphone and sang one of her songs, she wouldn't be nearly as loved as she currently is. When it comes to music I don't look at what a singer/band is wearing or how many effects they use on live tours. I listen to their music, decide whether I like the melodies or not and the minute I hear a really over-used cliché of a lyric, I immediately stop listening to them. I hate those songs - which are usually R&B - which basically go along the lines of: 'I met this girl in a club. She was hot. Now I'm claiming I love her and can't get her out of my head.' I find it so annoying and don't understand why everybody loves those songs! I love when a band or singer takes AGES to release a new album, because it shows that a lot of thought went into it. A lot of experimenting and changing and improving. And it also shows that the artist is not a slave to the music industry, constantly producing new songs, just so that they can get more money. I think the perfect example of a great band are British rock band Muse. First of all, the three band members are great friends, they know how to have a great laugh and they're incredibly individual. Matt Bellamy, for starters, lead singer, guitarist and pianist. Now I don't think he's one of the greatest pianists ever but he is pretty damn amazing and he is great at improvisation on a piano. I do think he is one of the greatest guitarists ever! He was recently named - at the end of 2009 - guitarist of the decade, and described as this generation's Jimi Hendrix, and I completely agree! His singing voice is also spectacular. He can reach the most spectacular high notes and his falsetto is heavenly! He also writes most of the songs and they have the most amazing lyrics. They can be extremely inspirational and make you feel many different emotions, whether he's singing about Political conspiracy theories (eg: Exo Politics) or about soldiers dying (eg: Soldier's Poem). The drummer Dominic Howard is amazing, he has perfect rhythm and timing and probably doesn't get as much recognition as he should. The bass player Chris Wolstenholme is definitely something special. He is so amazingly bad-ass (for want of a better word) at bass but he is such a shy person it's hard to believe that he has so much talent. They have made the most diverse and spectacular music and are magical live. But most of all they are just three really genuine and nice guys who care a lot about their music. Now I've just written a hell of a lot about Muse and you've probably stopped reading by now. But I would love to see someone try and write a similar paragraph about how "amazing" someone like Lady Gaga or Kesha is (her name is Kesha the dollar sign stupid!)
If you're still reading. Thanks, you're awesome! Rachael

I enjoy all kinds of music but I think debating music is pretty pointless because it is all based off of your opinion. Then again you could base it off music theory and things like that but sometimes music should just be something you listen to and not over think it.
Now, one thing I have noticed about "mainstream" music and music hear on the radio is that it is all the same. What I mean by "all the same" is that it has been done before. I think our generation is struggling to find our iconic music that defines us. Think about the kind of music you find in the 70's, 80's, and even 90's. What comes to mind? Now think about after 2000. Do any particular bands that define us? I can't.

In my opinion, today's music IS crap because all of it has to be written as a poorly written love song, usually by people who have never been IN love, or it just makes no sense at all. The lyrics are the same three words repeated in varying orders throughout modern music, and none of the music MEANS anything anymore. not to mention that many of the artists hire people to write their songs, instead of making them themselves! Music way back in the day (I listen to 50's-80's music, personally) actually meant things to the people who wrote them, love songs were written FOR people, songs carried messages and they were based on actual thought! They were original, and did not take bits of old songs and re-make them for their purposes; if a musical artist wanted to send a message, they would somehow entwine it with their songs, and show their opinion through their music. I think that this concept, of original thoughts and songs with lyrics that actually MEAN something, has been lost and has been getting more and more lost each year since the late 70's. The musicians before then were all original, each one different from the next and were almost NEVER mistaken for someone else; today's music has given this image of one type of music, almost all of it having this deep bass beat in the background. The bands of today are always mistaken for one another, their songs all sound the same and even share many alike lyrics, what has happened to the individuality and the altogether escape that was once called music? If you don't believe that last point, click this link and listen to a combination of the top 25 songs of last year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNzrwh2Z2hQPDBAZ!

I'm not really into all this rap, R&B, and mainstream bullshit. Music used to be all about expression, and your emotion, and love for music, now it's all about getting famous. Sure, bands back then got famous, but it just kinda came along with their music, it wasn't something they intended to do, and also they mostly got famous to get their music out there, not to be famous themselves.
My Chemical romance for example- some of the most thought provoking, and metaphorical lyrics I've ever heard. Their songs tell stories in a metaphorical manner, and even with all this fiction inside their music, there is still a lot of real things in it that plenty of people relate to. The lead singer Gerard after seeing someone in the crowd wearing a shirt that said "MCR Saved My Life" said "Thats the fucking real point of all this". Also he said "When we first started it was kinda like therapy for us, and it still is". Bands like this are what keep me intrested in music these days, it's to hear someone's opinion and their intentions.

Three things I have a theory. I think that during any time period that there is good music and bad music. As time passes, bad music is forgotten. Good music is kept around. So hopefully 30 years from now, there won't be My Chemical Romance or Justin Beiber on classic rock radio. There will only be the cream of the crop. I disagree with there being no creative music out there. Kaki King is totally awesome! www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL0V4terG1kBeirut sounds very different. Gulag Okerstar is a great album www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCkT4K-hppEHave you ever met anyone who just didn't like music?

So hopefully 30 years from now, there won't be My Chemical Romance or Justin Beiber on classic rock radio. There will only be the cream of the crop. I was thinking about this earlier today. I work at McDonalds and while I was working, I noticed a younger high school kid wearing a Def Leppard shirt. I began trying to think of a band in our generation that might be printed as a "vintage" tshirt and worn by high school kids thirty years from now. Nothing came to mind. Funny thing is, I was someone who didn't like music until about my freshman year of high school. Let me rephrase that, it's not that I didn't like music, I just never really listened to it. If someone were to ask me what kind of music I liked back then, I would be clueless. Now I can go on and on talking about music that I like because it has grown to be one of my biggest passions.
