Did anyone read my response?
Whether or not it "exists", sin is a man-made idea. And as I stated in my first response, a "tool". I don't believe sin is a "real thing", but an idea which is used for persecution. Without the idea of sin, Christianity holds almost no water. Sin is the reason why Christianity works, because Christianity is the answer to a problem that Christianity created...sin.
Read my first response if you want to understand further...I guess.

Seriously 0_0 use the "Bible" thread or any other of the threads made specifically for christians there might be in the debate section.
@flappy: The first definition of sin you gave sounds more like a definitions of a god's morals. I'd say sin is the act of going against these morals (or read my post in the second page if you feel like doing so =P). Sin has and it's being used as a tool in religions, just as hell and other forms of divine punishment. I'm not sure if you could say that sin is the only reason people follow some religions or christianity (today). I think there is people who follow religion for different reasons than fear of punishment or need to repent or be forgiven.

What I meant was that only by gods standards is something sin (God ordained sin. He has the only say in what is or is not sin.) I don't disagree that people follow religions for other reasons, even Christianity. I was just making the point that sin is a tool used by them. And as you said, things like Heaven and Hell are also tools. Of course people follow religion because it gives them a sense of purpose, a comfort, and other things, that they could get in other things and in other ways, but I think religion is kind of a quick fix to be honest.

So if sin is a concept purely defined by the god of a religion, could there be sin outside religion? or universal sin applying to all religions?

So if sin is a concept purely defined by the god of a religion, could there be sin outside religion? or universal sin applying to all religions? I don't think so... There's just right and wrong, based on the moral code of the society in question. Since sin is something you are punished for in the next life, than it can't exist without religion, without some form of which there is no 'next life'. Also, the idea of original sin is a concept unique to Judaism and Christianity. Although you can find similar circumstances in some eastern religious traditions(for example, you were a sinner in your past life, and are are now being punished for it in this one), the idea of simply being born a sinner because of an ancestor's crimes without ever committing a sin of your own, is unique.

Yeah, exactly. Sin can be something that is not right or wrong, like homosexuality.
