I'm doing a school project on To Kill a Mockingbird. I have to do a section for each letter of the alphabet. For N, I'm doing the N-Word. Should I write it as "the N-word" or the actual word? Keep in mind that I'm in the 8th grade and I'm in a district with a large African American population.

I say don't do it on that word if you don't want to be beaten up.

It's 1/26 of my project. And as far as I know, it's just between my teacher and I.

I wouldn't use it, it's a horrible word. It's like a piece of violence all by itself. Those words need to die. No one should try and "own" them or reclaim them, they should just die.

Ok, I won't. The only reason I would use it, would be in quotes from the book. I'm still doing a page on how the n-word was used, but I'm not saying the actual word.

Yes I think it's okay to use it in direct quotes. Within inverted commas, but the title of the chapter is your own, and you should never use it yourself. Awesome book by the way.

I use it. My friends use it (black and non-blacks alike) I don't mind. It's just a word, and it has as much power as you give it IMO.
I'm black, if that matters.

Meh, I already finished and I didn't use the actual spelling. It's just a lot less risky.

If the "n-word" you are referring to is negro, then it's fine. If it is the slightly different derogatory version of that word, it is not okay. In my opinion, anyway.

I'm not afraid, I'm just afraid. My teacher is old fashioned. So I decided against it.

If you're not using a word in a negative connotation, then it shouldn't have any value. If you are really going to get offended by 2 syllables put together, you should rethink your values. I'm just going to say it right now to prove a point
Nigger.
I wasn't directing it towards anyone and I meant no harm to whom it may refer to. It's just a word.

We had a discussion about this the other day in English because we're currently reading "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." I don't really care if it's in a book because it's part of the literature and how a certain time period spoke, but I always feel incredibly uncomfortable saying it. I'm also the same way with the c-word.

Probably the word that rhymes with what you do when you're 4th and long.
(That's a football reference)

The N-word is unlike other curse words as it is not a dysphemism. It is specifically designed to be derogatory. There is no situation that you can use it in and have it actually mean something good. Its sole purpose in existence is to bring black people down. This is why it should not be used.
