Greetings SPOTM community, this morning i woke up with the idea to make a browser based Multiplayer game, sadly, i have no clue on what the theme, storyline and the sorts could be, i'm only good at programming these things. So here i am, having an idea, the ability to make a sturdy frame to make it run, but no clue whatsoever on how it should look and feel. so here's my question to you all: What do you like in Browser based games? (Please don't reply with "nothing, they all suck", but instead, say something like. "I find most of them not balanced due to A B, and C", so we can actually use it.) What games have you played? (this is to see what genre is played most.) What part of the project do you think fits you best? - Story writer
- Graphic Artist
- Programmer (PHP, XML, HTML, CSS, SQL and javascript are languages i'm thinking about.)
- Translator. (i'm talking "world languages", english german, french, italian, etc..)
- Alpha/Beta tester. (AKA: Bugfinders.)
- Something else that i haven't thought of yet!
Please use one of the following to contact me: (in order of preference) EmailPMReplyXfire (click for my profile, please state: "SPOTM" in your request, as i decline random friends.)

Doing a browser based MMO (or any MMO for that matter) is insanely hard. However, if you're confident about this, go ahead. If they're well made, they can be great fun (plus, you don't have to spend an hour downloading a huge client).

If you need help translating, I could give it a go.. I'm fairly OK at French and German and have Dutch as my mother tongue, so I could be useful. I'm willing to look up French and German stuff if I don't know it. xD

Translate it into portuguese then. It's the 7th most spoke language in the world. It's in front of languages like German, French and Italian.

I know it's hard, but guess what? i like challenges. besides, i never said it'd be done anytime soon. If you need help translating, I could give it a go.. I've been developing dynamic PHP-based sites for almost 10 years, and Java applets for about 3. Just let me know if you need me; maybe have a look at a few unfinished projects of mine: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LwNzxJIDMAwww.youtube.com/watch?v=auJiO0ADZK0 [In C#, but one of the only examples I've got up.]

Oh, wow, i think i explained it wrong, i'm not going to make a 3D-ish game with java or flash or smth, i'm looking for the more simpler ye olde "text based" (though graphicly enhanced) game...

Haha, my specialty actually. The whole reason I took up programming in the first place was to figure out exactly how Neopets worked.
Here's an idea I had a while back... Although I'm not exactly sure how the mechanics would work; but it'd be something like this:
A custom set of forums with quite a few alterations. Anyone who posts in a thread becomes a potential target. You can initiate a battle by clicking a button next to their name, and they will be sent a confirmation. If they accept the confirmation, the next post between the two battlers would do damage to the others hit-points. The ability to attack would be disabled until the other player has attacked. It's essentially a turn-based battle system fused with forums. Items can be incorporated, escaping from the battles, etc.
I think if pulled off well, the site would stand out quite a bit from other role-playing sites.

i like the idea, however, i want to script this from scratch, and this sounds more like a forums add-on, don't get me wrong, it sounds GREAT.. it's just... not my vision...

that's awesome, sean, you're hired. I'd like every1's attention to this: so here's my question to you all: What do you like in Browser based games? (Please don't reply with "nothing, they all suck", but instead, say something like. "I find most of them not balanced due to A B, and C", so we can actually use it.) What games have you played? [/quote] I like how they're available everywhere.. And the fact that they usually don't take ages to load or install, you can just run it. I have played Battleon and Dragonfable. They both suck, but hey, I'm no supergamer.

it's always good to have more people on board, the more people, the better, but i'd like the ones that are ab-so-lu-tly serious about joining to email me with their role and (if possible) previous experience... not to say that those without experience won't be allowed in, but it's nice to see what people have already done, to tune into their experience. (for example: somebody with experience in writing history stories would be better for background stories than unit descriptions...) why email? that's just so i can keep it together, and to have a private way of communicating and transferring private files (source codes and stuff)
