i like the idea, however, i want to script this from scratch, and this sounds more like a forums add-on, don't get me wrong, it sounds GREAT.. it's just... not my vision... Actually, I hate adding onto other scripts. When I'm planning a heavy modification to a basic system like that, I usually just start from scratch. It takes much longer altering/studying another developer's code than just writing your own in most cases. But suit yourself; I was just throwing an idea out there. I'm up for just about anything.

I would be interested in doing testing as well as maybe some programming. I'm a 3rd year software engineer, with little experience, but I'm extremely interested in games.

This is such an awesome idea. I love MMO's. Neopets is the only one I can remember getting super interested in. I'll have to do some brainstorming.
But yeah, great idea. I can't wait to see what happens with it.

I have played Battleon and Dragonfable. They both suck, but hey, I'm no supergamer. Oh God, the memories.

Just one question though: How does this decrease the amount of suck in the world? I'm just wondering.

Just one question though: How does this decrease the amount of suck in the world? I'm just wondering. It doesn't. Like a lot of the projects here, this one doesn't really help us decrease worldsuck.

I think if the game brings happiness to those playing it, it will thereby decrease worldsuck.
Also if it brings our community together, or more members into our community, that will indirectly decrease worldsuck, yes?
Once our culture has become a bit more concrete it will be easier to decide what projects are worth our focus, but right now I think this one is definitely worth embracing.

www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.htmlpleeeese watch this, she talks about how video games can unite communities and harness human power, she talks about how video games can make us better people, how we're at our best when we're playing them, how we can apply that to the real world, and how we can design games that will teach us real life lessons.

Also, I've never said that this project is bad. It is a great project that, like many other great projects, has little use beyong helping the community grow closer.

There are millions of games for having fun.
This is going to be better than Travian? 4story? The thousands of other free online games? Travian is probably the best strategy game ever made and 4story is a copy of WoW which must have something good about it because millions of people dedicate their lives to it. Why can't people have fun while decreasing world suck, you know, so that when they're finished playing a game for 100 hours or they achieve something they don't have that horrible sinking feeling like they could have learned to speak a language or play an instrument but instead they made some lights move around on the screen. I am sure anyone else here who is a serious gamer knows exactly the kind of feeling I'm talking about.
There are people in the world who have actually played video games for so many hours in a row that they have died. Imagine what that kind of dedication could lead to if directed at something that could have an effect in the real world.
Creating an educational game that changes attitudes and lives and yet is still fun isn't easy, but that's why it's worth doing and that's why it would be something unique.

You are right! That brought tears to my eyes. That is the kind of awesome-level we have only seen in dreams.
"Rapty" I'd call him.

I'd call mine something nice and cuddly, like Typhus or Anthrax.
Now let's get back on topic.

when one hears 'education' one might not go trough with it..
I however, are very open minded... speak of this educational thing some more... spread our awesomeness upon us...

People can learn without realizing their learning, like Spore or SimCity

Rabbitwho, thanks for posting that TED video. I saw it a while back and was really moved by some of those ideas. If we can somehow teach people the value of community, contribution, or purpose, or better yet, bring all of the players together for a good cause that tangibly reduces worldsuck, we could definitely transcend just "having fun".
