What should BP or the U.S. do to prevent the oil spill in the gulf of mexico? I was thinking since oil has a different ph level than water than they could make a retention system. Anyone got any other ideas?

you mean prevent it from spreading or stop it? because it already spilled! i don't know i think the world should wake up to the light(solar or windpowered btw) and stop relying so much on oil. and whatever works best to stop the spilling is fine by me as long as its efficient and doesn't cost trillions.

A nuclear weapon should do it. I mean that's what they do in the movies, right?

Hurricane season is almost upon us. Can you imagine oil falling from the sky? We'll have everyone start a fire so it would be raining firey oil.
And that is how the world is going to end.

This could work... what do you think? Of course we would attach everything together with duct tape...

I don't know the exact situation about what's being done to fix this; but in my opinion the US government etc. should have literally dropped EVERYTHING and make the oil spill their number 1 priority and not rest untill it's all gone!
I mean c'mon how long is oil out there by now?

I was watching the news yesterday morning. They're going to use a diamond-threaded saw to slice a clean cut below the hole in the pipe of the well, and then they are going to replace the cap.
*This just in* Apparently the saw got jammed while cutting... Wow, BP, wow...

The shears did end up getting through. No word on how the siphoning is going so far.
And to the person who said nukes don't work underwater.... What? XD The nuke is impractical in this situation due to the potential radiation spread, as well as the nature of this leak, occurring outside the BOP, which was faulty due to BP, by the way, makes that much less effective.

I believe that if we take two particles of matter, speed them up to 99% of light, and then clash them just above the spill, we may be able to create a black hole!
Who's with me!

I don't understand this thing entirely, can someone explain why the oil keeps rushing out? Like, is there nothing that controls the pressure of it? Like, they can't cut off the supply or anything? Much appreciated if you don't respond like I'm an idiot haha.

Much appreciated if you don't respond like I'm an idiot haha. Normally, there is a system in place that can just "cut-off" the flow of oil from the underground reservoir, and that is called the BOP, or blow-out preventer. On this rig, however, the BOP was in need of repairs prior to the explosion that destroyed the platform and caused the leak. Now the BOP is busted as all SHIRT and effectively useless, so the oil is coming out of multiple locations at once with no way to cut it off. The oil keeps flowing because oil is both hydrophobic and lighter than water, meaning that all the oil in the massive reservoir will keep rising out of anywhere it can in the pipes, and spread out and up as fast as possible.
