Actually - Japan was more likely responding to border disputes and aggression on the part of the American forces - they've been mobilized for awhile before Pearl Harbor (which is why there were so many ships there in the first place)
Also - much as I'd hate to put a point against my argument - Hiroshima and Nagasaki were military cities. There were as many soldiers as civilians

And last I checked, Japan might have had the attack on Pearl Harbor - but it wasn't the first loss of American life during the war, just the straw that broke the camel's back.
Also Japan didn't start the war...I think everyone who has a background in education at all knows that.

Many many points here krzych32: Damn straight @aust: Well, they had joined the Axis quite a bit earlier and waited till 41 to attack. ryan They did start the fighting in the Pacific (as far as I'm aware). They had their armies mobilized because both were waiting for the first strike (again, I think. I'd have to look it up again. Correct me if I'm wrong)

So you are a teacher?
Yes, it wasn't all that simple, but Japan together with Germany and Italy in Europe were clearly the agressors. And just right now I realized I have no idea why we are even talking about it.....

You can spend HOURS debating who started WWII - it's not as simple as saying it was Germany - because the allied powers were responsible for creating the situation Germany was in to appoint Hitler - the allied powers doing so at the end of WWI - started by Austrian aggression in Serbia - et cetera.
Leave the start of the war out of this.

Now, was the bombing of this thread justified?
I'll take the Zang approach, and say yes

I feel that the bomb droppings weren't entirely necessary, but we did need to do something VERY drastic.
The bombs did not only force Japan to surrender, but it also sent a frightening message to the Nazis. The message being "We are bigger than you, and you are going to die" Rather or not this was a good message to send is to debate, but IT SURE WORKED!
